The Healing Waters Dance Project, a collaborative effort between Deep Rhythm Inc., a US registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and Afronautika Ventures, a pioneering Limited Liability Company in Nigeria, aims to address racial and economic inequalities by harnessing the power of dance and storytelling. Through a dance documentary inspired by the movement and elements of the waters off and on the Atlantic coast of West Africa and the healing water dance traditions of the region, the project seeks to foster healing, reparation, and restoration. The mission of The Healing Waters Dance Project is to showcase the stories of people, places, problems, and potentials encountered during expeditions along the Bight of Benin and the Atlantic coast of West Africa. By leveraging the power of storytelling, the project aims to shed light on the economic and social injustices and inequalities left behind by the transatlantic slave trade and the potentials for restoration. Through this initiative, we seek to engage the African diaspora and racial justice audience in conversations and actions that lead to meaningful transformation. During our explorations in Nigeria, we documented the stories of marginalized artisans in the village of Povita and its surrounding coastal communities in the Badagry area of Lagos where we were immersed for 7 months. By amplifying their voices, we shed light on their immense talent and creativity, positioning them as agents of change within their own communities. In Ghana, we celebrated the cultural heritage of the region and collaborated with a local dance troupe in the town of Kasoa. These encounters reaffirmed our commitment to providing platforms for cultural preservation and exchange, revitalizing the essence of heritage.
